The actress kicked off a firestorm on Thursday for saying that India attained “real freedom” in 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power, and described India’s Independence in 1947 as “bheek”.
Protests erupted outside her house on Friday afternoon. A group of the NSUI staged a protest and demanded that her Padma Shri award be taken back for ‘insulting’ the brave freedom fighters and martyrs.

Besides the protest, several politicians from the ruling party and the opposition have slammed the actress for her remarks.
Delhi BJP leader Praveen Shankar Kapoor was the latest to demand that the judiciary take action against her.
“Being the son of a freedom fighter and coming from a family of freedom fighters, I find Kangana Ranaut’s remarks that India’s freedom was alms (bheekh) as the biggest misuse of freedom and an insult to the sacrifice made by freedom fighters. I wish the judicial system of India takes cognizance,” Kapoor said in a tweet in Hindi on Thursday.
Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Thursday termed the actress’ remarks as ‘outrageous’ and also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence and tell whether he endorses such views, else the government should take appropriate legal action against Ranaut.
Hindustani Awam Morcha president Jitan Ram Manjhi also slammed Ranaut for her controversial remarks and demanded that the Padma Shri conferred upon her be “withdrawn forthwith”.
